Question 7
Question 7 on Dipity.
In terms of improving from the prelimary task i believe that i have gained various skills that have helped me to create the final music magazine STROBE. These skills are technological as well as personal. For example i have understood what works well with images in terms of effects, an example of this can be taken from my front cover to which layering was used in order to add depth to my magazine front cover. I have also learnt that adding text in the correct places can make a magazine seem more desirable to the reader as it shows that there is a variety of relevant information inside the music magazine. In terms of personal skills, i have learnt that perseverance payys off. An example of this can be the article to which i wrote. This took a considerable amount of my time as i had to correct the grammar and add details to it. I found that after a lot of perseverance it had payed off and that my article was interesting to read.

Evaluation Drafts
. Formal conventions of music magazines are
structured in a way which allows the user to navigate through with ease. This
is because of a contents page being presented towards the front of the
magazine. My music magazine STROBE also has a contents page which clearly
outlines the topics issued within it. The majority of magazines linked to the
same genre of dance are not very often seemed as black and white. I have
however developed the formal convention of having a public figure at the front
and displayed this person ion black and white. I believe the image so much more
powerful if it is displayed in a black and white format. My music magazine also
consists of a double page spread and an article to which is also found in the
majority of Music magazines today let alone specifically linked to dance.
Evidence for this would be taking a look at some music magazines such as
“Mixmag” to where contents pages, articles and double page spreads are present.
In terms of the front page music magazines often consist of one figure to whom
people recognise and can familiarise themselves with. I have taken this concept
and used a male model in which stands out. “Mix mag” often consists of more
than one figure as you can see by this example. I need to follow the same ethos
and style as “mix mag” since the genre is the same as my music magazine. This
is why I have developed the idea of having one model however used the image
simultaneously in order to create a much more vibrant affect. In terms of my front cover the individual often looks directly at the camera in order to draw attention to itself. I have recreated this and believe that it was vital that the front cover image also glared at the camera. I have used various different types of fonts on the front cover in order to keep the viewer interested. An example of this can be seen on the front cover of the magazine "MixMag" to where font sizes, styles and colours are also varied in order to look more vibrant and attractive to the eye. In terms of the background i have used the same image layered as i have previously mentioned, this would challenge formal conventions as usually they are a plain colour in order to make the individual more bold and add authority to the character. I have gone for a different technique which i believe has worked well due to the image being in black and white. If the image were to be in colour then i do not think that the effect would work and instead would look cluttered and chaotic.
2. My music magazine represents a lively and busy
lifestyle of the younger generation today, the fact that my music magazine
consists of event details and dates suggests that the younger generation of
today are always looking for something interesting and socially stylish. The
images within the music magazine of STROBE consist of people at a younger age
than what would you find in say a classical music magazine. This appeals to the
younger audience and gives them basic ground on which to link themselves to the
magazine. The social group as a whole would be represented as lively people,
not the shy or timid kind but those who are always looking for the next event
in which they would be approved by their friends for turning up. In terms of the font the colour i believe it appeals to the younger generation as the font is far from formal. By this i mean the fonts chosen are often related strongly to flyers and posters rather than letters.
3. The type of media institution would be a difficult
choice since IPC media sell over 350 million copies a year and have been
publishing since 1958. They are known for distributing magazines of dance and
techno which would be well suited to my choice of institution. I believe IPC
media would be interested in publishing my music magazine as it is heavily
linked to “NME” to which they have had large success in publishing over 20,000
copies every circulation which is weekly. The NME may be a music magazine
however it is linked to rock much more than dance or techno and therefore the
institution that I believe would distribute my magazine is Vibe this is because
primarily this institution has not distributed a magazine of this exact genre
but instead feature R&B and hip hop artists which still consists of an
urban link, therefore exploiting the chance of success within the institution. Mixmags institution is development hell ltd. This means that my institution of VIBE will benefit from issuing my magazine as there is a gap in the market compared to Development Hell Ltd.
4. The audience for my media product would be
primarily younger people who have a vibrant social life. They would often be
interested in new technologies and occurrences from around the globe. Their
preference of music genre would be dance and techno and would be heavily
interested into new songs and albums from this particular genre. The type of
people would be outgoing and would not shy away from an opportunity of
expressing themselves. The audience would not be gender specific although
evidence from my research and planning suggests that the genre of music is
primarily more appealing to the male audience. In terms of ethnicity the
majority were Caucasian which would have no real impact in the construction of
the magazine however it should still be included in the research.
5. I addressed my audience in a way in which they
would find most appealing. Since the younger generation are much more
straightforward and outspoken it would seem logical not to waste their time
with information not necessary. In the article created for my magazine there is
no irrelevant information. Getting straight to the point would save the reader
time as they would not want to hear minor details about a particular person. As
I noticed flicking through the articles created by “Mix mag” it is also clear
and easily structured without pointless explanations. I would attract the
viewers’attention by bold and clear titles as I believe this is the most
informative way of getting a message across. I came across this technique
whilst carrying out research of music magazines in a shop to where all the
titles reached out and grabbed by attention with their extravagant titles. I
have tried to replicate this process by adding colour and effects to the title
STROBE.
6. The type of technologies that I have learnt from
this process includes different techniques in photoshop such as layering and
the various effects used to enhance images. I learnt how to crop images
efficiently and appropriately considering the layout of the page. I also used
the contrast and brightness tools in order to achieve the atmosphere being
presented. I also used brushes in order to change the opacity and hardness of
specific parts of the image. In changing the opacity it will set the background
and foreground images. I also found that changing the size of the brush will
help to remove details that are very intricate and require more attention. I
also found that layering images over others gives a very unique effect as I
found this not only on the front cover but also when designing album covers. I
learnt various ways in which to blend certain images together by the use of
colours. I also found that using the transform tool helps to rotate, scale and
screw the image which I have used efficiently when it came to the double page
spread image. The masking technique is something that I have persevered with
and have proven that if used well then it can be useful when isolating portions
of the image.
7. During the progression of my music magazine I have
learnt how to work programs that I am unfamiliar with. An example of this would
be using pages to which was different from the conventional method of using
Microsoft word. Since doing subjects more familiar with a PC and not a mac it
was challenging at first to adjust to the change however I believe I am now
more capable in completing a task whilst using the programmes on a mac. I have
also learnt that creating a music magazine requires resilience and constant
adjustments which I found difficult changing certain aspects of my music
magazine which I believe looked good for the sake of marks. I have had
experience with working with images as I used to do photography, this was
different however because I was taking the images for the soul purpose of using
them in my magazine and not taking photos for the sake of taking photos.
Because of this I now know the type of images needed in order to capture the
essence of a particular genre and the type of clothing required. Overall I
believe my music magazine has given me the confidence in trying new things and
exploring the concepts people have about music magazines.
